The 5 Best Tablets for the new School Year

By Lito Carasig - Thursday, July 28, 2011

We are already halfway through the summer and a month from now the school hallways will again be buzzing with so much activity as September ushers in the new school year. So I thought what could be better than to start the school year right by gearing up with the latest and coolest tablets that you can shake a stylus at.

We’ll start with the newest of the pack – the HP TouchPad which has recently become available.  The TouchPad with webOS is HP’s initial foray into the tablet world and so far, the combination looks very promising.  The number apps designed for the webOS is continuously increasing everyday so no worries there about being left behind. The HP TouchPad comes in 16GB ($499.99) and 32GB ($599.99) so if you’re one of the adventurous one, you’d have a chance to grab the bull by the horns and go against the norm by choosing a newcomer with a trusted brand.

One look at the UI of the Asus Eee Pad Transformer and you’ll definitely be sold if you’re the student who loves tweaking everything on the gorgeously responsive multi-touch screen.  Powered by the Android OS, you won’t miss out on the latest apps since the Android Market is teeming with them. Add to this the nifty Transformer keyboard dock and voila, instant laptop!  At an MSRP of $399.99, it is also one of the more budget-friendly tablets out there without scrimping on the specs.

Students who want a reliable tablet with a long battery life will surely find something to love in Acer’s Iconia Tab W500.  Powered by Android Honeycomb 3.0 (similar to all the Android tablets featured here), the Iconia Tab W500 combines mobile entertainment with superior productivity at the push of a button.  It also comes with a slew of accessories that could make school work a bit easier if not totally enjoyable.  Expect to shell out about $499 to score of these beauties.

If your bag is already full to the brim with books and school work, then you’ll definitely choose the thinnest and the lightest of the available tablets around: Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1.  It also runs Android Honeycomb 3 so you won’t be left wanting with all the school apps you’ll be needing to ace the grade. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is competitively priced at $499.99 a pop.

And of course, this list won’t be complete without the King of Tablets, the iPad 2 by Apple.  What more can we say, with more than a million apps for the iOS, instant functionality and intuitively easy to use out of the box, the iPad 2 deserves the title hands down. Plus the coolness it lends to the user is another reason why you should definitely consider the iPad 2 when you do decide to get yourself a tablet in time for school. Pricing starts at $499 for the 16GB Wi-Fi base model.

Yes, it’s only a month away until school starts again. So if you are still sitting on the fence and can’t decide on what to buy, perhaps this guide will show you the right direction to a wise purchase.  Tell us what you think.
